Het lied verscheen in 1739 zoals boven in John Wesley & Charles Wesley, Hymns and Sacred Poems, London: Printed by William Strahan; and sold by James Hutton […], MCDDXXXIX (1739), p. 206-208. De huidige beginregel dateert van de uitgave van George Whitefield (1740-1770) in zijn A Collection of Hymns for Social Worship, London, 1753, p. 24-25. De verbinding met Mendelssohn (melodie) werd o.a. gelegd in de Hymns, Ancient and Modern, London, 1861, nr. 43. Voor details, zie Chris Fenner (Externe links).

Muziek

Het lied werd in eerste instantie gecombineerd met Salisbury (melodie) (en daartoe van de nodige halleluja's voorzien).

Mendelssohn (melodie) is door Williams Haymans Cummings bewerkt van een mannenkoor uit het tweede deel van de Festmusik zur Säcularfeier der Buchdruckerkunst, de zg. Gutenbergkantate van Mendelssohn uit 1840 (MWV D 4).
