Ontstaan

Het lied verscheen in vijf strofen in de editie 1707 van Watts’ Hymns and Spiritual Songs. Volgende edities wijzigden alleen de tweede regel, maar zetten ook de vierde strofe tussen haken. Die blijft in andere uitgaven dus vaak weg.

Muziek

Het lied is in eerste instantie wel gezongen op traditionele psalm-melodieën. Vóór 1820 werd het vooral gezongen op Richmond (±1765) van Martin Madan (1726–1790). In de Verenigde Staten wordt het veel gezongen op Hamburg (melodie), een bewerking van een oudere melodie door Lowell Mason (1825). In Engeland en Canada, en ook in Nederland, werd een bewerking van Tunbridge door Edward Miller (1790) dominant, in Nederlandse liedboeken doorgaans Caton (melodie) genoemd, elders wel Rockingham, Rockingham Old, of Rockingham (Miller). Uiteraard zijn er veel meer melodieën gebruikt voor When I survey the wondrous cross. Omdat de Gospel Hymns die geven wordt hier de refrein-melodie van Ira David Sankey genoemd.
