Ontstaan
Het lied is volgens Ira David Sankey (My Life, 1907, 344-5) geschreven onder de indruk van zeven preken over Johannes 3:16 die de Engelse evangelist Henry Moorhouse (1840-1880) hield in Chicago in de winter van 1869-70. “In singing it, Bliss put special emphasis on the word ‘whosoever’.”
Het verscheen voor het eerst in George Frederick Root, The Prize. A Collection of Songs, Hymns, Chants, Anthems and Concert Pieces for the Sunday School, Cincinnati: John Church & Co. [1870], p. 7.
